Davis Helps LSU to Share of Title

Glen Davis had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lift No. 21-ranked Louisiana State to a 64-61 victory over South Carolina on Tuesday night at Columbia, S.C., giving the Tigers at least a share of the Southeastern Conference title.

Davis, the SEC’s leading scorer, was held to six points in the first half, but Louisiana State, 21-7 overall and 13-2 in the SEC, pounded the ball inside in the second half to earn its first conference title in six years.

Tarence Kinsey led the Gamecocks (14-14, 5-10), who have lost four games in a row, with 21 points.

The Gamecocks had a chance late in the game trailing by two, but Kinsey was called for traveling. Tasmin Mitchell made a free throw with 26 seconds to go to put the Tigers ahead, 62-59.

No. 12 Boston College 80, Wake Forest 65 -- Craig Smith had 23 points and eight rebounds, and Jared Dudley scored 22 points at Boston to help the Eagles clinch a bye for the first round of their first Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Boston College, which defected from the Big East Conference over the summer, could improve its position more Saturday.

A victory over Virginia Tech in the regular-season finale could help the Eagles (23-6, 10-5 ACC) avoid top-ranked Duke until the conference championship game.

Trent Strickland scored 15 points for Wake Forest (14-15, 2-13), which was 0-8 on the road in conference games.

No. 10 Illinois 71, Minnesota 65 -- James Augustine had 16 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high seven assists at Minneapolis to keep the Illini in the race for the Big Ten Conference title.

Dee Brown scored 14 points and Rich McBride scored 12 for Illinois (24-5, 10-5 Big Ten), which trails Ohio State by half a game for the conference lead.

Vincent Grier scored 19 points and Moe Hargrow had 17 in their final home game for the Golden Gophers (14-12, 5-10), who have lost 15 in a row to Illinois, dating to 1999.

WOMEN

No. 15 DePaul 82, Syracuse 57 -- Khara Smith had 15 points and 14 rebounds at Chicago to lead the Blue Demons.

Allie Quigley contributed 13 points and three steals for DePaul (24-5, 11-5 Big East), and Caprice Smith had 11 points and five rebounds.

Vaida Sipaviciute scored 16 points for Syracuse (9-18, 2-14).
