People cheered as Griffith Jenkins Griffith, a Welshman who made a fortune in mining, walked into the chambers of the Los Angeles City Council, holding a long roll tied with a blue ribbon. It was the deed for a vast plot of land that he was donating to the city as Griffith Park. Griffith said he was giving more than 3,000 acres to the city with the stipulation that it be used as a park for all to enjoy. “Public parks are a safety valve of great cities,” he once proclaimed, “and should be accessible and attractive, where neither race, creed nor color should be excluded.”
