Savoring her role

Times Staff Writer

SET decorators love Doris Feldman. The proprietor of Jefferson West Antiques, a 10,000-square-foot warehouse in Culver City, says she has provided pieces for some of this summer’s big popcorn sequels, including a 16th century treasure chest in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and furnishings for the apartment of Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) in “Spider-Man 3.” “We have at least 5,000 pieces in inventory,” Feldman says. Shoppers can peruse chandeliers made in styles including rustic and Rococo, 19th century European furniture and vintage Americana, including an 18-foot-long horse racing game. 9310 Jefferson Blvd., Culver City; (310) 558-3031; www.jeffersonwest.com.

MADE IN CALIFORNIA

A clear formula

San Diego designer Garo Hachigian’s credenzas, dressers and tables merge American black walnut and aluminum with thick slabs made from a proprietary blend of polyurethane resin. The textured, slightly springy material looks like a sheet of ice but is far from cold, says Hachigian, who defines his work as “tactile modernism.” The easy-care plastic can accommodate warm dishes, but, cautions Hachigian, “I wouldn’t put a sizzling pan of fajitas on it.” End tables from $2,100; Coffee 1, below, $4,900. Flashes of inspiration

The Movable Feast candelabrum began with a collection of decorative grapes. “Not the beautiful Italian glass ones from the ‘50s and ‘60s,” says Kathleen Walsh, owner of Walteria Living, “but the skeezy plastic ones covered in cobwebs at garage sales.” Intrigued by the form, the Hermosa Beach designer came up with a modern, functional version. The central stem piece is made of high-fire earthenware with magnetic caps, each of which can grasp a grape-shaped tea light holder. The pieces have a matte exterior but are glazed inside to make wax and soot easy to remove. Available in bisque white ($280), shown here, satin black ($320) and, starting May 15, gold-plated ceramic ($380). Show in Los Feliz, (323) 644-1960.
