Glavine Cools Off Streaking Phillies

Tom Glavine used his bat and his arm to end Philadelphia’s longest winning streak in 15 years.

Glavine pitched seven strong innings and drove in a pair of runs to help the visiting New York Mets beat Philadelphia, 13-4, Wednesday night, ending the Phillies’ nine-game winning streak.

The Mets pounded Phillie starter Cory Lidle (3-4) early, with eight players getting hits and all nine scoring while New York built a 10-0 lead through three innings. The National League East-leading Mets pushed their lead back to four games over the second-place Phillies, who were on their longest winning streak since a 13-game run in 1991.

“We just have to throw this one out the window and bounce back tomorrow,” Phillie Manager Charlie Manuel said.

Jose Reyes homered for the Mets, who won for the 10th time in their last 14 games. All of their starters had at least one hit as the team finished with a season-high 17.

Glavine (5-2) won his third straight start, giving up three runs and four hits, and striking out four. The .188 career hitter also had a two-run double in the third and a single up the middle in the fifth.

St. Louis 7, Colorado 4 -- Albert Pujols hit his major league-leading 18th home run and Jeff Suppan (4-2) won his fourth start in a row in leading the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Pujols also leads the majors with 43 runs batted in and the NL with 35 runs.

Florida 11, Atlanta 3 -- Rookie Josh Johnson (3-2) gave up only one unearned run in six innings, and the Marlins totaled 17 hits to end their streak of 11 consecutive home losses.

Miguel Cabrera was four for five with a home run, two doubles, two RBIs and four runs. Joe Borchard homered and had a career-high four RBIs, and Mike Jacobs also homered for Florida.

NL batting leader Edgar Renteria was 0 for 4, ending his 23-game hitting streak.

San Diego 3, Milwaukee 0 -- Josh Bard hit a two-run double at San Diego to lead the Padres to their 10th victory in their last 11 games.

Chan Ho Park (2-1) scattered seven hits in six scoreless innings for his first win in his last four starts.

Arizona 7, Pittsburgh 4 -- Brandon Webb withstood a shaky start to win his sixth in a row, Chad Tracy had four hits and Shawn Green drove in three runs to lift the Diamondbacks at Pittsburgh.

Webb gave up three runs and 10 hits but improved to 6-0 in eight starts. He also was 6-0 last season before finishing 14-12 for Arizona.

Cincinnati 9, Washington 6 -- Scott Hatteberg hit a bases-loaded, two-run double in the eighth inning to lift the Reds at Cincinnati.

Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer and Felipe Lopez stole a career-high four bases for the Reds.
