Plane Crashes and Hits SUV; 2 injured
A small plane attempting to make an emergency landing Friday at Oxnard Airport crashed and slammed into a sport utility vehicle, injuring the pilot and driver but not the girl in the backseat of the SUV.
All three were taken to a local hospital, where the 65-year-old pilot was treated for serious injuries. The driver of the Honda SUV suffered minor injuries, but her 2-year-old granddaughter -- secured in a car seat -- was unharmed, said Oxnard Police Cmdr. Jason Benites.
The names of those involved were not immediately available.
The pilot had just taken off about 1:40 p.m. when he began having engine trouble and tried to circle and make an emergency landing. The plane bounced out of the airfield, went through a fence and struck the passenger side of the SUV, which was traveling on Victoria Avenue.
“The pilot suffered some serious injuries to one of his legs and head,” Benites said. “The driver of the Honda sustained a broken arm. The child is 100% OK.”
