Former Redskin Smith Sentenced on Drug Charge

Tim Smith, who set a Super Bowl rushing record with the Washington Redskins in 1988, was sentenced Friday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for cocaine distribution.

The 42-year-old former running back also was ordered to pay $88,000 in back child support and must report to prison by July 10.

His brother, Christopher Smith, 35, was sentenced May 12 to five years of probation.

The two were indicted by a federal grand jury in October. Tim Smith pleaded guilty to cocaine distribution and Christopher Smith pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting cocaine distribution.

They were arrested Sept. 30 and charged with possession of 500 grams or more of cocaine with intent to distribute. Police said Tim Smith sold about 20 ounces of the drug to an undercover officer for $13,600.

Smith rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns in the Redskins’ 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in the title game. He last played in the NFL in 1990 with the Dallas Cowboys.

He lives in Denver and had worked as a detention officer a youth services center. He resigned shortly before he was indicted.

Chicago Bears cornerback and former UCLA standout Ricky Manning Jr. pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles to an assault charge stemming from an alleged attack on a man in a restaurant last month.

Manning, 25, appeared in court but entered the plea through his attorney. He remains free on $30,000 bail.

He waived his right to be in court June 16, when a date is to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require the former UCLA player to stand trial on a charge of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.

Two other former UCLA players, Maurice Drew and Tyler Ebell, are scheduled to appear on the same charge, also on June 16.

All three are accused of attacking a man at a Denny’s restaurant early on the morning of April 23, according to prosecutors. They were arrested soon after in Manning’s car.

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Fred Smoot and left tackle Bryant McKinnie pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from the team’s raucous boat party last October.

Each agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and perform 48 hours of community service.

Smoot and McKinnie pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and being a public nuisance on a watercraft. The second charge will be removed from their records if they stay out of trouble for a year.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said fines are likely but said the players won’t be suspended.

Cleveland Browns running back Reuben Droughns threw his wife out the door of their home in Littleton, Colo., after she said she wanted a divorce, according to a sheriff’s report.

Droughns was released on $2,500 bail on one count of assault and two counts of harassment. He surrendered to police and spent the night in jail.

Former Fresno State basketball player Terry Pettis was convicted of murdering a teenage woman in a botched drug robbery.

The 21-year-old faced a mandatory sentence of life in prison for first-degree murder and armed robbery in the death of Rene Shannon Abbott, a Fresno City College student who was behind the wheel of a car while her boyfriend sold marijuana in the seat next to her.

Pettis shoved a handgun through the open driver’s window and demanded the drugs, witnesses said. The gun fired when Abbott, 18, tried to drive away.

A federal appeals court in Little Rock, Ark., said that former basketball coach Nolan Richardson wasn’t a victim of racial discrimination when Arkansas fired him four years ago.

Davydenko and Pavel to Meet in Hypo Final

Defending champion Nikolay Davydenko defeated Jiri Novak, 6-2, 6-2, and will play Andrei Pavel in the final of the Hypo Group International at Poertschach, Austria.

Pavel advanced with a walkover when Luis Horna withdrew from the semifinals because of a back injury.

Peng Shuai upset defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, and will play Nicole Vaidisova in the Strasbourg International final in France. Vaidisova got past Jelena Jankovic, who retired with dizziness while trailing, 6-3, 1-0.

Top-seeded Anastasia Myskina will play fourth-seeded Shahar Peer in the Istanbul Cup final. Myskina beat Michaella Krajicek, 6-2, 7-6 (5), and Peer defeated second-seeded Anna-Lena Groenfeld of Germany 6-0, 6-2.

USC’s Schreefel Wins NCAA Golf Title

USC’s Dewi-Claire Schreefel had two late birdies in a three-under-par 69 and finished at two-under 286 to win medalist honors. Schreefel, a sophomore from the Netherlands, beat Duke’s Jennie Lee by two shots.

Duke won its second consecutive team title at the NCAA women’s golf championships at Upper Arlington, Ohio, with a 72-hole total of 1,167. USC (1,177) was second and Pepperdine (1,187) third.

Joey Railey’s single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Mitchell Bialosky from second base with the winning run in San Francisco’s 7-6 victory over visiting Pepperdine in the opener of their best-of-three series for the West Coast Conference baseball championship.

San Francisco can earn the conference’s automatic berth into an NCAA Division I regional with a victory today at noon.

Oregon State clinched sole possession of the Pacific 10 Conference baseball title by defeating UCLA, 9-2, in the first of three games at Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers (39-13, 16-6) had 17 hits against the Bruins (31-23, 12-10).

UCLA (46-7) will play host to South Florida (50-23) at 3 p.m. today in the first game of a best-of-three NCAA Division I softball super-regional. Game 2 of the series will be Sunday at noon with another game, if needed, at 3 p.m.

USC’s Lindsey Nelson and UCLA’s Riza Zalameda each upset a top player at the NCAA Division I women’s tennis tournament at Stanford. Nelson defeated top-seeded Audra Cohen of Miami, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, and Zalameda beat two-time NCAA champion Amber Liu of Stanford, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

UCLA’s Joel Tuosto won the long jump with an effort of 25-6 3/4 at the NCAA west regional track and field championships in Provo, Utah.

Peter Chiarelli was hired by the Boston Bruins as general manager, getting a four-year contract. Chiarelli had spent the past two years as assistant general manager of the Ottawa Senators.

The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed goaltender Curtis Joseph to a one-year contract, bringing the 39-year-old back for a 17th NHL season.

Striker Wayne Rooney, who is recovering from a broken right foot, has been ruled out of England’s first two games of the World Cup.

The Galaxy will face Crystal Palace in the Major League Soccer team’s second game against an English club. The game will be July 19 at the University of Richmond in Virginia.

Kansas State men’s basketball forward and leading scorer Cartier Martin has been suspended indefinitely from the team for unspecified conduct violations, and guard Mario Taybron was dismissed from the team for violating the university’s policy on substance abuse.

Qualifying for the City of Mansfield 250 NASCAR Craftsman Trucks series race in Ohio was canceled because of thunderstorms and the majority of the lineup was set by championship owner points.
