A 14-year-old girl who was illegally driving a van to pick up her brother at his San Jacinto elementary school Tuesday afternoon struck a 2-year-old girl who was running across the street toward her mother, police said.

The teen told police she never saw Marissa Diaz, who had been playing with other children on the sidewalk of Cypress Drive near Malaga Drive. She will be charged with driving without a license; the car was impounded, authorities said.

A Riverside County sheriff’s spokesman said he did not know whether the driver’s parents had been cited. Officials said they did not know the severity of the injuries of the toddler, who was being treated at the Riverside County Regional Medical Center.
