Citronnade rolls along

Jockey David Flores had Citronnade in third place Sunday when he said he “let her roll” entering the stretch, and the 3-year-old filly burst ahead and won by three quarters of a length in the $63,500 Audrey Skirball-Kenis Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on the turf at Hollywood Park.

“At the top of the stretch, I had a good hold and was waiting and waiting,” Flores said. “When I hit her left-handed, she responded strongly.”

It was Flores’ third win of the day. Jockey Tyler Baze rode four winners.

The big news for bettors was that nobody came through in the pick six, leaving a $541,201 carry-over for the races Wednesday.

Citronnade, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, had finished ninth in her previous race, the Grade I Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Kentucky. Trainer Bobby Frankel sent her to assistant trainer Humberto Ascanio, who liked what he saw in three weeks of training.

“She’s got a good future,” Ascanio said.

Sent off at 5-1, Citronnade took the lead in mid-stretch and held off 11-1 longshot Zoemeg, with 8-5 favorite Grande Melody finishing third.

Grande Melody was ridden by Julien Leparoux, the leading jockey in America with 382 victories, who had come in from back east.

The second week of racing ended at Hollywood Park with continuing rave reviews for the new Cushion track.

There have been no major breakdowns and no horses euthanized since the autumn meet began, track spokesman Mike Mooney said.
