Vermont drops Boston College

Vermont coasted to a 77-63 victory over No. 14-ranked Boston College on Monday night at Boston, the program’s second victory over a ranked team.

The Catamounts upset No. 11 Syracuse in the first round of last season’s NCAA tournament.

Sophomore Mike Trimboli had 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds, freshman Joe Trapani and Chris Holm had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Catamounts (2-1), who led by as much as 17 points.

Jared Dudley had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Eagles (1-1), who shot 30% from the field.

No. 11 Duke 72, Georgia Southern 48 -- Josh McRoberts and DeMarcus Nelson each scored 16 points to lead the Blue Devils (2-0) at Durham, N.C., in the second round of the CBE Classic.

The Blue Devils extended their nonconference home winning streak to 42 games.

Dwayne Foreman matched his career high with 18 points to lead the Eagles (1-1).

No. 16 Marquette 59, Idaho State 56 -- Dominic James scored 17 points and the Golden Eagles escaped with an overtime victory at Milwaukee in a first-round game of the CBE Classic.

Marquette (2-0) plays Detroit, which beat Maine, 57-50, in a second-round game today.

The Golden Eagles made only 19 of 64 shots and only 16 of 31 free throws.

Akbar Abdul-Ahad led the Bengals (0-1) with 17 points.

No. 17 Washington 102, Nicholls State 74 -- Senior reserve Brandon Burmeister scored a career-high 17 points for the Huskies (2-0) at Seattle in the Basketball Travelers Classic.

Adonis Gray scored 29 points -- 25 in the second half -- for Nicholls State and Aaron Scott had 24. It was the third game in three days in three time zones for the Colonels (0-3), who had only eight players in uniform.

No. 20 Creighton 78, Mississippi Valley State 42 -- Anthony Tolliver and Nick Porter each scored 14 points at Omaha to help the Bluejays to their 10th consecutive win in a season opener, each of the last seven by 20 points or more.

Demarkus Barnes led the Delta Devils (0-2) with 10 points.

No. 23 Georgia Tech 100, Jackson State 70 -- Freshmen Thaddeus Young, Javaris Crittenton and Zach Peacock were among six players in double figures for the Yellow Jackets (2-0) at Atlanta.

Sophomore Lewis Clinch led Georgia Tech with 16 points.

Senior Trey Johnson scored 33 points for the Tigers (0-2).

No. 25 Tennessee 78, Fordham 71 -- Chris Lofton scored 30 points and the Volunteers (2-0) survived a sloppy game at Nashville in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-off.

Brenton Butler scored 20 points for the Rams (1-1), who committed 29 turnovers.
