Three third-period goals were the difference as the Ottawa Senators made quick work of the Buffalo Sabres’ record-setting road winning streak.

Peter Schaefer and Dany Heatley each had a goal and an assist, and Ray Emery made 23 saves as the Senators beat the Sabres, 4-1, Saturday night and handed Buffalo its first road defeat in 11 games this season.

It was the second time in four days that the Senators (8-11-1) had rallied for a victory over the league-leading Sabres (16-3-1).

The Senators outshot the Sabres 32-13 over the final two periods. Maxim Afinogenov had the lone goal for Buffalo, which set the NHL record by starting 10-0 on the road. Buffalo’s Ryan Miller, playing his first game after sitting out five because of a muscle strain, made 37 saves.

“The second period is kind of where we needed to answer the bell,” Miller said.

Carolina 5, Dallas 4 -- Eric Staal scored three goals and Justin Williams broke a 4-4 tie with 6:32 left to lift the Hurricanes at Raleigh, N.C.

Williams got the go-ahead goal when he intercepted the puck in the right circle and beat screened goalie Marty Turco with a high wrist shot.

Edmonton 4, Detroit 3 -- Raffi Torres scored the game-winner in the shootout to give the host Oilers the victory. Edmonton had a 3-2 lead before Detroit tied it with 3.9 seconds left in regulation.

San Jose 6, Philadelphia 1 -- The host Sharks scored on six of 18 shots against Robert Esche, who was taken out after giving up a goal to Curtis Brown at 12:25 of the second period.

Boston 3, Washington 2 -- Glen Murray scored a power-play goal 2:06 into overtime to lift the host Bruins, who put together a four-game winning streak for the first time since March 2004.

Nashville 4, Columbus 2 -- Jason Arnott scored two power-play goals within a 48-second span in the second period to lift the Predators at Nashville.

Montreal 3, Atlanta 1 -- On a night when the host Canadiens honored defenseman Serge Savard, goalie Cristobal Huet made 39 saves and Michael Ryder and Alexander Perezhogin each ended lengthy goal-scoring droughts to fuel the victory.

Colorado 2, Minnesota 1 -- Joe Sakic’s shootout goal lifted the Avalanche at St. Paul, Minn. Sakic also scored Colorado’s only goal in regulation.
