The City Council agreed Tuesday to accept $200,000 from a nonprofit animal rights group to conduct a performance audit of the city’s Animal Services Department.

The money from Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society will also help the department develop a multi-year strategic plan, including becoming a department that no longer puts unclaimed cats and dogs to death.

Councilman Jack Weiss said the audit will provide relatively new General Manager Ed Boks with ideas for improving operation of the department.
