Firms Settle Accusation of Inaction on Gas Leaks

From Times Staff Reports

Shell Oil Co. and a gas station operator have agreed to pay $3.6 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that the companies ignored reports that underground storage tanks were leaking gasoline into the soil and groundwater, authorities said Tuesday.

Riverside County Dist. Atty. Grover Trask filed suit against Shell Oil Co. and Equilon Enterprises after investigators learned in June 2003 that Equilon had allegedly discovered and failed to report leaking underground storage tanks at three gas stations in the Coachella Valley.
