Kevin Smith rushed for a season-high 166 yards before getting hurt, and Michael Torres kicked a 22-yard field goal with 6.7 seconds left to lift Central Florida to a 23-22 victory over Marshall on Wednesday night at Huntington, W.Va.

Anthony Binswanger’s career-high 50-yard field goal gave Marshall a 22-20 lead with three minutes left, but that left enough time for Central Florida quarterback Steven Moffett.

Moffett, who was benched for most of the first half, completed four passes in a row to move the Golden Knights, 2-3 overall and 1-1 Conference USA, to the Marshall 17 with 50 seconds remaining. He finished 13 of 19 for 165 yards. Jason Peters then ran 14 yards to the three, setting up Torres’ third field goal of the game, each from 22 yards.

Illinois and Michigan State were fined $10,000 apiece and coaches Ron Zook and John L. Smith were reprimanded by the Big Ten as the result of a postgame altercation between the teams Saturday.

Moments after Illinois upset Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., 23-20, Illini players attempted to plant their school flag at midfield. That led to pushing and shoving between several players on each side before order was restored.
