Big Promise Looks to End Tough-Luck Losing Streak

Share

A tough-luck loser in two races at Del Mar, Big Promise will try for her third career win in the seventh race today at Santa Anita.

Trained by Paddy Gallagher, Big Promise, a 4-year-old Rahy filly, lost by a nose Aug. 7 in her first start of the meet, then lost by the same margin less than a month later.

In the $44,000 allowance at 1 1/8 miles on the turf today, Big Promise will make her first appearance at Santa Anita. Michael Baze, who rode the filly in her races by the beach, has the call again this afternoon.

The field is completed by Temperance, who won at nearly 7-1 in her U.S. debut for trainer Darrell Vienna in the final race of the Del Mar meet Sept. 6, Miss Double Dots, Tuff Muffin, who finished half a length behind Big Promise when third last month, Stormin Lucy, Thanks, Royal Cheer, Ballado’s Thunder and Guest.

Stormin Lucy, a 4-year-old Native Storm filly owned by a partnership and trained by Jason Orman, is the only member of the cast with more than one win over the Santa Anita turf course. The California bred is two for six on the layout.

Aaron Gryder will ride Stormin Lucy in her first start since finishing third in an optional claimer May 28 at Hollywood Park.

Race of the day: Tuffertiger, who has been first or second in all six of his starts, will seek his second win at Belmont Park in the third race today. Garrett Gomez will ride the 4-year-old Tiger Ridge gelding for owner-breeders Sheila and Fred Mead and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin in the $47,000 allowance at 6 1/2 furlongs. The race is not part of a pick six with a carry-over of $167,014.

One for the road: Driskoll looks like the controlling speed and could go wire to wire against a suspect field in the second race today at Hawthorne. Jose Lopez will ride the 3-year-old Albert The Great colt for trainer Alejandro Razo in the $17,500 claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Miss Melissa in the third, Pink Polkadots and Coit De Terroir in the fourth and Souvenir Evening and Voracious in the fifth.
