Giorgio Baldi attitude comes at a price

Share

THANKS for your honest evaluation of Giorgio Baldi [“Old Style With Lots of Attitude,” Oct. 4]. You hit the nail on the head -- largely mediocre food at ridiculous prices. The last time I was there was six years ago, when I took an out-of-town friend who is an Italian wine importer. After that dinner, he coined the term “getting Giorgio Baldi’d,” referring to any experience involving a particularly over-priced dinner with rude wait staff.

THE last time we visited this restaurant was about a year ago. After waiting 45 minutes for an 8:30 p.m. dinner reservation, we were seated at a table adjacent to the foyer. Patrons were allowed to gather in this area, repeatedly striking me in the head. Although I complained to management, they were unresponsive. They did give me some complimentary Champagne -- it was spilled on my jacket while being served at the next table.

FOR years Giorgio’s has been the favorite special occasion place of my husband and myself. We are not part of any Hollywood in-group, nor are we financially able to eat there so often that the waiters easily recognize us. We are quite elderly, and since my husband doesn’t drink at all, we order just one glass of wine at dinner. Yet we have always been treated with great courtesy and care and advised reasonably about the menu. The food has unfailingly been superb. We have always left the restaurant feeling that yes, it is very expensive, and worth every penny.
