Memorial Service for Pitcher Cory Lidle to Be Held Today
A memorial service for New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle, who was killed along with his flight instructor in a plane crash last week in New York City, will be conducted this morning at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Covina.
Yankees Manager Joe Torre and General Manager Brian Cashman, as well as first baseman Jason Giambi -- Lidle’s Yankee and boyhood baseball teammate from South Hills High in West Covina -- are expected to attend the 9 a.m. public service with other teammates from Lidle’s nine-year career with seven major league clubs.
Lidle, 34, of Glendora and his 26-year-old flight instructor, Tyler Stanger of Walnut, were killed Wednesday when the pitcher’s single-engine plane crashed into a condominium tower on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Federal authorities are investigating the crash.
Lidle is survived by his wife, Melanie; and his 6-year-old son, Christopher.
Instead of flowers, the Lidle family has asked that donations be made to Stanger’s pregnant wife, Stephanie, and her young daughter.

Stanger’s public memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at SkyRose Chapel at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
