Hawaiian “surf king” Sunny Garcia was sentenced Wednesday to three months in federal prison for failing to pay taxes on money won riding waves.

The six-time winner of surfing’s Triple Crown, who retired in 2005, won more than $1 million.

“Coming from a poor family, you want to buy everything you never had,” the 36-year-old Newport Beach resident said outside the courtroom. “I spent my money foolishly.”

Garcia also said he is considering a return to the pro circuit.
