Sakic gets 1,500th point in loss

Olaf Kolzig stopped 45 shots -- including 20 in the third period -- to help the Washington Capitals beat the Colorado Avalanche, 5-3, on Wednesday night at Denver, overshadowing Joe Sakic’s 1,500th point.

Sakic had an assist in the first period to become the 11th player to reach the milestone.

Detroit 2, San Jose 1 -- Robert Lang’s third-period goal at Detroit ended a three-game losing streak for the Red Wings.

Florida 4, N.Y. Rangers 2 -- Ed Belfour made 35 saves and Jozef Stumpel scored two goals to help the Panthers to their first road victory of the season.

Vancouver 5, Chicago 0 -- Roberto Luongo made 32 saves and recorded his 28th career shutout, and Henrik Sedin had two goals and an assist at Chicago in handing the Blackhawks their third straight loss.

Carolina 5, Atlanta 4 -- Anton Babchuk scored 1:11 into overtime to help the Hurricanes win their first game at home.
