Rutgers 21, at North Carolina 16: Ray Rice rushed for 201 yards and a career-high three touchdowns and the Scarlet Knights held on at Chapel Hill, N.C. North Carolina had the ball at Rutgers’ 29-yard line late, but Manny Collins intercepted a pass from Joe Dailey on a third-down play with 1:52 left to seal it for Rutgers.
at No. 17 Virginia Tech 38, Northeastern 0: Sophomore Sean Glennon threw three touchdown passes in his first start to lead the Hokies at Blacksburg, Va. Glennon completed 15 of 18 passes for 222 yards in less than three quarters.
at No. 18 Clemson 54, Florida Atlantic 6: Will Proctor passed for 166 yards and three touchdowns at Clemson, S.C. Jacoby Ford had a school-record 92-yard punt return touchdown for Clemson.
at Wake Forest 20, Syracuse 10: Micah Andrews rushed for 142 yards and the Demon Deacons won at Winston-Salem, N.C., despite losing quarterback Benjamin Mauk to a broken right arm.
Richmond 13, at Duke 0: Andrew Howard kicked two field goals and Eric Ward threw a touchdown pass in his debut to lead the Division I-AA Spiders at Durham, N.C. Duke lost to a Division I-AA team for the first time in nine games since 1978.
at Maryland 27, William and Mary 14: Lance Ball ran for 86 yards and two touchdowns, Keon Lattimore had a career-high 86 yards rushing, and the Terrapins won at College Park, Md. The Division I-AA Tribe is 0-10 against ACC teams since 1986.
at North Carolina State 23, Appalachian State 10: Andre Brown ran for 125 yards and a touchdown to lead the Wolfpack past the Division I-AA national champion Mountaineers at Raleigh, N.C. The defense held Appalachian State to 133 total yards.

at No. 7 Florida 34, Southern Mississippi 7: Chris Leak threw three touchdown passes And for 248 yards, and highly touted freshman Tim Tebow ran for a score to lead the Gators at Gainesville, Fla.
at No. 8 Louisiana State 45, Louisiana Lafayette 3: JaMarcus Russell had three first-half touchdown passes to lead the Tigers at Baton Rouge, Fla.
at No. 15 Georgia 48, Western Kentucky 12: Joe Tereshinski threw for 90 yards and Mikey Henderson scored on a 67-yard punt return at Athens, Ga.
at Alabama 25, Hawaii 17: John Parker Wilson threw for 253 yards in his first start and Leigh Tiffin made three field goals at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

at No. 5 West Virginia 42, Marshall 10: Steve Slaton ran for 203 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers at Morgantown, W.Va. Slaton, the nation’s top freshman in 2005 with 19 rushing touchdowns, had his second straight 200-yard game. He set a Sugar Bowl record with 204 yards last January.
at South Florida 41, McNeese State 10: Matt Grothe came off the bench to throw for two touchdowns and run for a third, helping the Bulls pull away for a win at Tampa, Fla. Grothe replaced injured starting quarterback Pat Julmiste in the second quarter.
at Pittsburgh 38, Virginia 13: Tyler Palko threw a pair of first-down touchdown passes longer than 70 yards, and the Panthers rolled at Pittsburgh to get off to a strong start in Coach Dave Wannstedt’s second season.
at Cincinnati 31, Eastern Kentucky 0: Dominick Goodman caught two touchdown passes to help the Bearcats win at home. Nick Davila completed 10 of 19 passes for 121 yards for Cincinnati, and Dustin Grutza was nine for 15 passing with 161 yards.

at No. 1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12: Troy Smith tossed touchdown passes of five and 58 yards to Ted Ginn Jr. on the Buckeyes’ first two possessions as they rolled at Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio State offense had 488 yards but also lost fumbles twice inside the Northern Illinois 10-yard line.
at No. 14 Michigan 27, Vanderbilt 7: Mike Hart ran for 146 yards, and the Wolverines started strong to win at Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan secured the victory when quarterback Chris Nickson fumbled for a second time with 4:33 left.
at No. 16 Iowa 41, Montana 7: Drew Tate threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns, and Albert Young had 148 yards of total offense and two scores to lead the Hawkeyes at Iowa City. Iowa’s defense held the Grizzlies to 154 yards.
at No. 19 Penn State 34, Akron 16: Anthony Morelli threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns in his first start, and the Nittany Lions won at rain-soaked State College, Pa.
at Indiana 39, Western Michigan 20: Blake Powers and Graeme McFarland each threw one touchdown pass, and the Hoosiers scored on interception and punt returns to win at Bloomington, Ind.
at Illinois 42, Eastern Illinois 17: Tim Brasic threw for 149 yards and Pierre Thomas rushed for 126 yards in 15 carries at Champaign, Ill., as the Fighting Illini ended a nine-game losing streak.
at Michigan State 27, Idaho 17: Drew Stanton threw for 225 yards and a touchdown to lead the Spartans over the Vandals.
Wisconsin 35, at Bowling Green 16: John Stocco threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another at Cleveland in the debut of Coach Bret Bielema.
at Purdue 60, Indiana State 35: Curtis Painter passed for 261 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Boilermakers at West Lafayette, Ind.

Montana State 19, at Colorado 10: The Dan Hawkins Era at Colorado started with a bevy of blunders and a stunning loss to the visiting Division I-AA Bobcats at Boulder. Cory Carpenter threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jefferson and Jeff Hastings kicked field goals of 35, 44, 19 and 41 yards.
at No. 3 Texas 56, North Texas 7: Colt McCoy threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Limas Sweed on his second pass and the defending national champion Longhorns passed their first test without Vince Young.
at No. 10 Oklahoma 24, Alabama Birmingham 17: Adrian Peterson ran for 139 yards and scored twice to lift the Sooners at Norman, Okla.
at No. 20 Nebraska 49, Louisiana Tech 10: Zac Taylor matched his career high with three touchdown passes and the Cornhuskers won their 21st consecutive season opener at Lincoln, Neb.
at No. 25 Texas Tech 35, Southern Methodist 3: Graham Harrell threw for 342 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders at Lubbock, Texas.
at Oklahoma State 52, Missouri State 10: Bobby Reid threw four touchdown passes -- doubling his 2005 output -- to lead the Cowboys at Stillwater, Okla.
at Kansas State 24, Illinois State 23: The Wildcats scored two special teams touchdowns and stopped a two-point conversion to win at Manhattan, Kan.
at Missouri 47, Murray State 7: Chase Daniel set a Tigers record with five touchdown passes in a rout at Columbia, Mo.
at Texas A&M; 35, Citadel 3: Stephen McGee threw for 200 yards and a touchdown and ran for another to lead the Aggies at College Station, Texas.
at Kansas 49, Northwestern State 18: Quarterback Kerry Meier passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Jayhawks at Lawrence, Kan.
