Frank Thomas hit his 31st home run of the year, a three-run shot in the sixth that pulled the Athletics to within one run at 5-4. Thomas has 1,553 career runs batted in and moved past Fred McGriff for 36th place on the all-time list.

at Kansas City 5, New York 0: Jorge De La Rosa and Todd Wellemeyer combined on a shutout, and Yankee Mike Mussina was hit hard in his return from a groin injury. Derek Jeter was one for five, extending his hitting streak to 16 games and leaving his average at .343, two points behind Minnesota’s Joe Mauer, who leads the AL.

Minnesota 8, at Tampa Bay 0: Johan Santana struck out 12 and walked one, giving up two hits to lead the Twins to their 14th win in a row over the Devil Rays. The left-hander retired his first 10 batters before Delmon Young doubled with one out in the fourth. He then got eight out in a row before Young singled to lead off the seventh.

Cleveland 7, at Toronto 2: Andy Marte’s grand slam in the eighth inning broke a tie and carried the Indians over the Blue Jays. Trailing, 2-1, in the eighth, the Indians rallied with five runs against reliever Jeremy Accardo. Bengie Molina homered for the Blue Jays, who had won three in a row.

Seattle 4, at Detroit 3: Joel Pineiro came on after a 1-hour 23-minute rain delay and worked 3 2/3 innings of perfect relief for the Mariners, who won for only the second time in 16 road games. The Tigers have lost nine of 13, and lead Minnesota by only four games in the AL Central after having a 10-game edge on Aug. 8.
