San Jose State Rallies for Upset of Stanford, 35-34

Yonus Davis rushed 184 yards and San Jose State rallied from a three-touchdown deficit to stun Stanford, 35-34, on Saturday.

Adam Tafralis passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Spartans (1-1), playing in front of the third-largest home crowd ever, won their fifth consecutive home opener.

Trent Edwards threw a career-high four touchdown passes, two of them to Evan Moore, but Stanford lost to San Jose State for the first time since 2001.

The Cardinal (0-2) took advantage of a botched kickoff return and dropped punt to help score 27 straight points in the first half.

After the teams traded touchdowns, San Jose State closed to within 34-21 in the final minute of the half when Tafralis passed 11 yards to James T. Callier for a touchdown.

The Spartans opened the second half with an 80-yard drive. Patrick Perry bulled his way eight yards into the end zone for the score.

Stanford fumbled the ball back to San Jose State on the next possession, with Trey Jackson recovering. Davis went 31 yards on the first play and James Jones raced 42 yards on another great run to put the Spartans up 35-34.

Dwight Lowry intercepted Edwards’ pass in the end zone late in the third quarter to preserve the lead and Demetrius Jones recovered a fumble with 1:29 left.

No. 8 Louisiana State 45, Arizona 3 -- Jonathan Zenon returned an interception for a touchdown for the second consecutive week, highlighting a smothering defensive performance to lead the Tigers (2-0) over the Wildcats (1-1) at Baton Rouge, La.

Arizona had only 54 total yards through the first three quarters. The rest of the Wildcats’ yardage came after replacements had begun to take over and a boisterous crowd of 92,218 was half gone.

LSU fullback Jacob Hester scored two touchdowns, his first on a five-yard pass from JaMarcus Russell to cap a short drive set up by B.J. Dennard’s fumbled kickoff return. Hester ran for a 28-yard score in the third.

Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama finished eight for 17 for 50 yards and two interceptions.

No. 15 Oklahoma 37, Washington 20 -- Paul Thompson threw two touchdown passes to Malcolm Kelly, and Adrian Peterson ran for 165 yards and two scores to lead the Sooners (2-0) over the Huskies (1-1) at Norman, Okla.

Thompson broke a 13-13 tie on Oklahoma’s first possession of the second half when he found Kelly racing down the right side of the field for a 35-yard touchdown pass to put Oklahoma ahead for the first time.

Garrett Hartley made it 23-13 with his third field goal, a 30-yarder, after Jason Carter blocked Washington’s punt on its next drive.

Washington recovered a fumble at the Oklahoma four, but Washington quarterback Isaiah Stanback fumbled on the next play.

No. 20 Oregon 31, Fresno State 24 -- Kicker Paul Martinez scored on a four-yard run on a fake field-goal attempt with 4:55 left and the Ducks (2-0) avoided an upset by beating the Bulldogs (1-1) at Fresno.

With the score tied at 24-24 late in the fourth quarter, Fresno appeared to stop Oregon on third and goal from the four.

Holder Brady Leaf then took the snap for the field goal and ran to his left, drawing two defenders before tossing the ball to Martinez on an option play. Martinez stumbled in from the four for the tiebreaking score.

No. 22 California 42, Minnesota 17 -- DeSean Jackson caught three of Nate Longshore’s four touchdown passes in the first half, and the Golden Bears (1-1) rebounded from a big loss to Tennessee to defeat the Golden Gophers (1-1) at Berkeley.

Marshawn Lynch rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, and Jackson caught seven passes for 114 yards.

Lavelle Hawkins had a career high nine catches for 125 yards, and Robert Jordan also caught a touchdown pass in Cal’s sharp passing game.

No. 25 Arizona State 52, Nevada 21 -- Rudy Carpenter threw a career-high five touchdowns, and the defense forced four turnovers to help the Sun Devils (2-0) rout the Wolfpack (0-2) at Tempe, Ariz.

Carpenter completed 17 of 26 passes for 333 yards in his second start since Coach Dirk Koetter demoted his preseason No. 1 quarterback, Sam Keller, who transferred to Nebraska. Carpenter also threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

Washington State 56, Idaho 10 -- Alex Brink threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Cougars (1-1) to a rout of the Vandals (0-2) at Pullman, Wash. WSU had 637 yards of offense.
