Cleveland 5, at Chicago 2: Victor Martinez hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning, C.C. Sabathia (11-9) pitched a four-hitter and the Indians earned a split of a four-game series. The White Sox remained 3 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central. Sabathia gave up a two-run homer to Tadahito Iguchi in the first but still ran his record to 3-0 against the White Sox this season. He walked two and struck out nine in his major league-leading sixth complete game of the year.

Oakland 9, at Tampa Bay 7: Frank Thomas homered for the fifth consecutive game and drove in three runs for the Athletics. Thomas’ 35 homers this season also match the team mark for a designated hitter set by Dave Kingman (1984 and ‘86) and John Jaha (1999). Joe Kennedy (4-0) won in relief of Barry Zito.

New York 9, at Baltimore 4: Derek Jeter extended his career-high hitting streak to 20 games, going two for four with a home run and four RBIs for the Yankees. Jaret Wright (10-7) gave up three runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings to earn his first win since Aug. 12. He did not permit a runner past first base until Ramon Hernandez homered in the fifth. Hernandez went three for four with two home runs and four RBIs, but the Orioles fell a season-high 18 games under .500 (62-80) while being officially eliminated from the playoff race.
