San Diego 10, San Francisco 2: Brian Giles drove in four runs and the Padres avoided a three-game sweep. Winning pitcher Woody Williams (8-5) doubled on the way to the third three-hit game of his career. He drove in a run and scored twice, helping the Padres improve to 2-11 in the last 13 meetings between the clubs. San Diego increased its lead in the NL wild-card race to 2 1/2 games by ending a six-game losing streak to its division rival. The Padres also remained 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the NL West. The Padres batted around in a four-run third against Matt Morris (10-13), who lost his second consecutive start. Barry Bonds was one for three a day after hitting his 731st home run and 23rd of the year, his sixth in nine games.

at Cincinnati 4, Pittsburgh 2: Bronson Arroyo (13-9) pitched eight solid innings for his third straight win, and Brandon Phillips drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth for the Reds, who trailed, 2-0, going into the inning. Arroyo gave up four hits and two runs with no walks and seven strikeouts.

at Arizona 9, St. Louis 7: Tony Clark and Eric Byrnes hit consecutive solo home runs in the eighth inning to lift the Diamondbacks over the NL Central leader for the third consecutive game after losing the series opener. St. Louis’ lead in the division dwindled to 4 1/2 games over Cincinnati.

at Atlanta 2, Chicago 1: Lance Cormier (3-4) pitched seven solid innings and struck out a career-high 10 without a walk, and Brian McCann doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth to help the Braves hand the Cubs their ninth straight road loss.

at Milwaukee 4, Houston 0: Dave Bush pitched a five-hitter and struck out a season-high 10 in the third shutout of his career. Tony Graffanino and Mike Rivera homered for Milwaukee.

at Colorado 13, Washington 9: Todd Helton hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning, Matt Holliday homered and drove in three runs, and the Rockies outslugged the Nationals. Helton was hitless in his previous 10 plate appearances before hitting his fourth career slam.
