Be tough on gang crime

Re “D.A. accused of inflating the charges in gang cases,” March 29

No sooner do prosecutors and police start using existing laws to crack down on gang members terrorizing local communities then a sob story about their legal plight appears. Apparently, it’s unfair that these gang members are charged with felonies, when charges that carry less time could be alleged. The claim is that punishing people for the crimes they commit isn’t “going to do the right thing for these young people.” Well, here’s a couple of messages to these gangsters and those who either defend or support them. First, the public is happy that those who destroy the property of others to mark their gang territory, or sell drugs to support their gang, are going to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Second, if you don’t want to be prosecuted as felons, don’t commit felony crimes.

So, defense attorneys think prosecution of gang members is overzealous. I wonder if they’d think that if any of them or their family members became victims of gang violence. Let’s make gang membership a felony. Problem solved.
