San Jose holds off Calgary, 4-3

Milan Michalek and Mark Bell scored within 1:40 of each other in the second period to help the Sharks to a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night at San Jose.

The Sharks solidified their hold on the fifth spot in the playoffs and set a franchise record with 106 points.

San Jose reached the milestone after getting its fifth victory in a row.

Jarome Iginla scored twice for the Flames, who missed a chance to clinch the final playoff spot in the Western Conference when Colorado beat Vancouver earlier in the evening.

New Jersey 3, Philadelphia 2 -- Jim Dowd scored a short-handed goal midway through the third period at Philadelphia.

Buffalo 4, Boston 2 -- Thomas Vanek scored twice and the host Sabres matched a franchise record by beating the Bruins for their 52nd victory.

Chicago 3, Detroit 2 -- Patrick Sharp and Jason Williams scored in the shootout to lift the Blackhawks past the Red Wings at Chicago.

New York Rangers 3, Montreal 1 -- Jaromir Jagr reached the 30-goal mark for the 15th consecutive season and added an assist to carry the host Rangers back into the playoffs with a victory over Montreal.

New York Islanders 5, Toronto 2 -- Jason Blake, Arron Asham and Miroslav Satan scored in the third period to preserve the Islanders’ faint playoff hopes at Uniondale, N.Y.

Pittsburgh 3, Ottawa 2 -- Maxime Talbot scored with 9.8 seconds remaining to lift the Penguins to a victory at Ottawa.

Columbus 2, Dallas 1 -- Rick Nash scored 1:04 into overtime and the Blue Jackets won at Columbus, Ohio.

Minnesota 3, Edmonton 0 -- Niklas Backstrom shut out the Oilers for the second time in three days at St. Paul, Minn.

Nashville 4, St. Louis 1 -- David Legwand scored two goals, Paul Kariya notched his 500th assist, and the Predators ended a three-game skid at Nashville.

Colorado 3, Vancouver 1 -- Milan Hejduk scored three goals to help the Avalanche preserve its slim playoff hopes with a victory at Vancouver, Canada.
