Texas’ Durant is headed to the NBA

Kevin Durant, an 18-year-old freshman from Texas who won the Wooden Award, said Tuesday he will leave the Longhorns to enter the NBA draft, bringing an end to a short but spectacular college career.

“I just thought it was time to go,” Durant said. “It’s been my dream for a while. I felt I was ready.”

Durant and Ohio State freshman center Greg Oden -- who has not said whether he’ll leave college -- are considered the probable first two picks in the June 28 draft.

Former UCLA coach John Wooden was out of bed and took a brief walk, his daughter Nan Muehlhausen said.

Wooden, 96, has been hospitalized since Sunday because of internal bleeding. Muehlhausen said the probable cause of the bleeding was a reaction to Wooden’s arthritis medication.

Kings will have fourth pick in NHL draft

Chicago won the NHL draft lottery, giving the Blackhawks the first pick in the June draft. The Philadelphia Flyers, who had a league-low 56 points, pick second, followed by Phoenix, the Kings and Washington.

Don Cherry, who has been a fixture on CBC’s “Hockey Night in Canada” telecasts for more than 25 years, will make his U.S. broadcasting debut as part of NBC’s Stanley Cup playoff telecasts, the network announced.

Force waits for safety report to resume racing

Driver-owner John Force said that his drag-racing team would resume NHRA competition this weekend in Las Vegas if he’s satisfied with safety changes to his cars in the aftermath of teammate Eric Medlen’s death.

Medlen died March 23 of head injuries caused by violent side-to-side vibration in a crash during practice.

Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon was arrested and being investigated for drunk driving after a trooper stopped him for allegedly speeding in Kirkland, Wash.

USC’s Lynn elected to college baseball hall

Fred Lynn of USC and Jim Abbott of Michigan were among 11 former players and coaches elected the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
