* at St. Louis 7, Cincinnati 5: Skip Schumaker, getting a rare start in place of injured left fielder Chris Duncan, had a career-best three hits and two RBIs to help the Cardinals rally from a four-run deficit at St. Louis. Duncan, who had a pinch-hit double in the eighth, bumped his head at home Thursday morning, suffering a cut that required about a dozen stitches.

* Washington 4, at Philadelphia 2: Shawn Hill gave up two runs and four hits in eight-plus innings and Dmitri Young homered to help the Nationals end the Phillies’ five-game winning streak.

* at Pittsburgh 5, Houston 3: Jason Bay’s two-run single in the sixth inning put the Pirates ahead to stay on their way to their second three-game sweep of the Astros this season. Barely 12 hours after stranding 18 runners on base during a 4-3, 16-inning loss to the Pirates, the Astros stranded 13 more in losing their sixth in a row.
