Firefighters mop up hot spots of brush fire
Firefighters on Sunday were mopping up the hot spots of a wildfire that charred 158 acres of dense brush in a residential area of Riverside County, authorities said.
The blaze was contained early Sunday, but 80 firefighters were still at work and the fire was not expected to be out completely until late today, said Rebekah Luther, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The fire started about 1:30 p.m. Saturday near the bottom of the Santa Ana River bed and continued east into heavy brush, authorities said.
The residents of 15 houses were asked to voluntarily evacuate, officials said, but all of them chose to stay.
No homes or structures were damaged, and there were no injuries, Luther said.
Firefighters were helped by a 20-degree drop in temperatures after sundown Saturday.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
