Kurt Warner, 36, wants to set the record straight.

The quarterback plans to play the remaining two years of his contract with the Arizona Cardinals. And all that talk about retiring after he lost the starting job to Matt Leinart last year? It was just that, talk.

“What I was saying when I said that was, the more that kind of stuff happens, the more I think retirement’s getting closer,” said Warner, who also lost starting jobs with the St. Louis Rams and New York Giants. “But it was never a situation where I said, ‘I’m going to retire, this is it.’

“It was just the frustration built up. I think about it more and more when I go through these situations because it’s never fun. And it’s never the way you want to come to work, but you accept your role and you move forward.”

Kansas City running back Priest Holmes has a message for holdout All-Pro Larry Johnson: If you don’t want the job, I’ll take it.

Holmes, 33, a three-time Pro Bowler, has been out of football since 2005 after suffering what many figured was career-ending head and neck trauma. But he said he’s ready to fill the 27-year-old Johnson’s shoes -- at least financially.

“Somebody has to get the money,” Holmes said. “Hey, if L.J. wants to leave the money out there, guess I’m going to take it. If he wants to come get it, it’s rightfully his to take. He’s earned it. But if he chooses not to come back, well, somebody has to take it. Why won’t it be me?”

Johnson has been a no-show at camp as he seeks an extension to the seven-year contract he signed in 2003.

Veteran receiver Amani Toomer was told by New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin that he would not play in the exhibition opener Saturday against the Carolina Panthers. Toomer had knee surgery in November.

New Orleans starting linebacker Scott Fujita was on crutches after the team’s return from a trip to a Jackson, Miss., water-slide park. Fujita said he was going to be fine.
