Roger Clemens was suspended for five games Thursday and New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre for one, the fallout from the right-hander’s hitting Toronto’s Alex Rios with a pitch this week.

During a testy three-game series, the Blue Jays’ Jesse Litsch threw behind Alex Rodriguez’s legs in Monday’s opener and Josh Towers hit Rodriguez on his calf with a pitch in the third inning Tuesday.

The benches and bullpens emptied twice, but no punches were thrown. Clemens then hit Rios in the middle of his back in the seventh inning. Clemens and Torre immediately were ejected.

Clemens, Rodriguez and Torre were fined, along with Yankees coaches Larry Bowa and Tony Pena, Toronto’s Matt Stairs and Josh Towers, and Blue Jays coach Brian Butterfield.

St. Louis Cardinals utility player Scott Spiezio voluntarily sought treatment for “possible problems related to substances” that the team did not specify.

Spiezio was placed on the restricted list and will be paid while he undergoes treatment. He has not played since Sunday.

Milwaukee Brewers infielder Tony Graffanino will sit out the rest of the season because of an injured right knee.

Graffanino came down awkwardly after leaping to catch a line drive in the first inning of Wednesday’s game at Colorado. He underwent an MRI exam Thursday that revealed a torn ligament.

The San Diego Padres parted ways with David Wells, designating the 44-year-old left-hander for assignment to activate All-Star Chris Young from the 15-day disabled list. The Padres have 10 days to make a move with Wells or he’ll become a free agent. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies acquired infielder/outfielder Russell Branyan from Cleveland for cash Thursday. The Indians also claimed backup infielder Chris Gomez on waivers from Baltimore. The Orioles also traded left-handed reliever John Parrish to the Seattle Mariners for a minor league outfielder and a player to be named or cash.
