at Detroit 11, Oakland 6: Magglio Ordonez hit two homers during an eight-run second inning and the Tigers won consecutive games for only the second time since mid-July. Ordonez joined Hall of Fame outfielder Al Kaline as the only Tigers to homer twice in one inning. Kaline did it in 1955 against the Kansas City Athletics.

New York 5, at Cleveland 3: Andy Pettitte (9-7) carried a shutout into the seventh inning, Jason Giambi homered for the second consecutive game and the Yankees improved to a major league-best 23-8 since the All-Star break. Mariano Rivera, called on to work out of a jam in the eighth inning, gave up three hits in the ninth before earning his 19th save in a row.

Seattle 6, at Chicago 0: Jeff Weaver (4-10) pitched his second shutout this season, Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer and the Mariners won for the 11th time in 15 games to stay atop the American League wild-card standings. Weaver had a season-high eight strikeouts and retired 11 batters in a row between the first and fourth innings.

Toronto 4, at Kansas City 1: A.J. Burnett (6-6), fresh off the disabled list, gave up three hits -- two singles and Alex Gordon’s home run -- in 7 1/3 innings. It was the first outing since June 28 for Burnett, who lost the shutout when Gordon led off the eighth inning with his 10th home run.

at Texas 9, Tampa Bay 1: Michael Young hit the 100th home run of his career, Marlon Byrd had a two-run single and Willie Eyre (4-5) threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings after rookie Kason Gabbard left because of a stiff left forearm after throwing one pitch in the second inning.

at Baltimore 6, Boston 3: Kevin Millar hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning after Miguel Tejada tied the score with a homer against Eric Gagne in the eighth.

at Angels 6, Minnesota 2: Jered Weaver pitched 7 1/3 innings and the Angels got home runs from Chone Figgins and Jeff Mathis to complete a three-game sweep.
