Hercules, a South American military macaw worth about $4,000, was stolen this week from the store where he had been a pet for 13 years.

“All I heard was a squawk,” said Nicole Bergeman, an employee of Prehistoric Times Reptiles & Fish. “I turned around and all I see is the back of the guy’s head shooting out the door.”

A witness at a tattoo parlor next door said she saw a man get into a dark green Toyota Camry that had its rear license plate covered. The man had the bird concealed under a shirt, with tail feathers showing, and was holding it like a football, the witness said.

About 30 minutes earlier a man and woman with a Chihuahua had asked about the macaw’s value, Bergeman said.

Hercules is bright green with turquoise-tipped feathers and has a red band above his bill.
