at Cleveland 6, Seattle 5: Kenny Lofton drew a bases-loaded walk from Rick White to force home the winning run in the ninth inning, and the Indians beat the slumping Mariners for their sixth consecutive victory. The Indians maintained their 4 1/2 -game lead over Detroit in the American League Central. The Mariners, who have lost six in a row, fell a game behind the New York Yankees in the wild-card race and 5 1/2 back of the first-place Angels in the AL West.

Tampa Bay 8, at Baltimore 6: The Devil Rays completed their first road sweep in more than two years, getting a three-run homer from B.J. Upton in a victory over the Orioles. Baltimore’s losing streak was extended to nine games. Nick Markakis and Kevin Millar homered for the Orioles, who won the opener of a 10-game homestand before a 30-3 loss to Texas began a skid on the same day the team announced Manager Dave Trembley would return in 2008.

at Texas 5, Chicago 1: Sammy Sosa hit his 606th home run and the Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the bumbling White Sox. Chicago made four errors in one inning and lost for the 16th time in 19 games. Chicago’s Jim Thome hit a homer, the 495th of his career.

at New York 5, Boston 0: The Yankees closed to within five games of the American League East leaders with their third consecutive victory over the Red Sox.

Detroit 6, at Kansas City 1: Curtis Granderson and Magglio Ordonez each homered and got three hits, and Jeremy Bonderman (11-7) halted his six-game losing streak as the Tigers avoided a sweep.
