Football season has arrived, and let’s hope nobody’s feelings get hurt.

The NCAA has done away with the terms Division I-A and I-AA football, lest some schools be considered second class.

Now the major-college teams formerly known as I-A who are eligible for the Bowl Championship Series are the Football Bowl Subdivision.

They do like their alphabets

The former I-AA teams, no longer saddled with that extra A, are the Football Championship Subdivision, because they have a playoff system that produces an official NCAA champion.

In other words, the FBS competes for the BCS title and the FCS plays for an NCAA title.

Why the change?

The NCAA just wanted to clear up any confusion.

Trivia time

What school won the FCS title last season?

Urban planning

Perhaps still giddy about Billy Donovan reneging on an NBA job to remain at Florida, some Gators fans have started a website to try to hold onto their football coach, www.keepurbanmeyer.com.

“Fact: Urban Meyer has never been the head coach of the same team three years in a row. When will Coach Meyer break his UF contract to leave for the pros?

“Keepurbanmeyer.com vows to keep up public pressure until Urban Meyer commits to not leaving the Gators before 2013 -- when his contract expires.”

Just a hunch, but we think Donovan’s flip-flop on the Orlando Magic offer had less to do with the folks at www.keepbillydonovan.com than with his own emotions and the new contract that will pay him an average of $3.5 million a year.

Meyer, the Gators’ other national championship coach, got a bump to an average of $3.25 million after the Donovan episode.

Say, who needs the Not For Long league?

Serena Williams didn’t have much patience for a reporter at the U.S. Open who asked about the photo of her bare backside that appeared in the August issue of Jane magazine.

“Oh, my gosh, you guys are so late. Dude, that’s so old, please. That is so late. I’m a little disappointed. You could have done better,” she said with a smile.

The magazine with a rear view of a nude Williams wearing heels and holding flowers to cover part of her bottom has been out since late July.

After “next questioning” the persistent reporter, Williams answered one more about the photo, which promoted a charity called Clothes Off Our Back that auctions celebrity-worn clothing to benefit children’s causes.

“I thought it was a great photo. It was for a great cause,” she said. “I thought it was simply divine, personally. I’ve gotten a lot of great compliments on it. Thank you.”

Verbal volley

Williams also swatted back a question about comments made by TV analyst Mary Carillo, who recently said Serena and her sister Venus should have dominated for more than 10 years and should have changed tennis history more than they have.

“Well, I think I’ve had a little more effect on tennis history than she has,” Serena said. “I’m pretty excited about that.”

“Now here’s what’s going to happen,” Letterman said. “Leona’s dog is going to use that $12 million to organize fights between NFL players. . .”
