UCLA women defeat Southern to end skid

The UCLA women’s basketball team stopped a three-game losing streak with a 79-52 victory Sunday over Southern University in the consolation game of the Nugget Classic at Reno.

The Bruins received contributions from all 13 players on the roster and were led by senior forward Lindsey Pluimer, who recorded game-high totals of 19 points and eight rebounds. Nina Earl was also in double figures with 11 points off the bench.

UCLA got off to a slow start, falling behind 9-4 after five minutes, but the Bruins quickly found their bearings and went on a 14-0 run to regain the lead, 18-9.

A Doreena Campbell three-point shot gave UCLA its first lead at 11-9, and the Bruins never looked back, outscoring Southern, 27-2, to go ahead, 31-11.

The Bruins went into the locker room with a 44-19 halftime advantage after shooting 47% in the half, including four for five from beyond the three-point arc, while holding Southern to 28.6% shooting from the field and forcing 13 turnovers.

In the second half, the Bruins jumped ahead 53-21 with 16:35 seconds left after a Campbell jump shot. A 16-2 run midway through the half increased the lead to 73-36 with 5:01 to play, and the Bruins cleared the bench. The Bruins had 53 rebounds, 17 assists and 16 steals.

In her first start of the season Tierra Henderson scored eight points with four rebounds and two steals.

Darxia Morris, Chinyere Ibekwe and Erica Tukiainen each had three steals. UCLA improves its record to 4-3, and Southern fell to 0-4.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 66, Menlo 44 -- Trae Clark scored 17 points and Dreshawn Vance had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the victory for the host Mustangs (4-3). The Oaks (2-4) did not lead after tying it at 36-36 with 13:31 to play. Clark made a jump shot a minute later that gave Cal Poly the lead for good, 38-36.
