A suspected drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into a car crossing a busy intersection early Saturday, killing two people, police said.

Jose Luis Vargas, 31, was driving his Acura Legend east on Sunset Boulevard about 1 a.m. when he ran a light at Gower Street and crashed into a southbound Honda Civic, instantly killing a man and woman, authorities said. The Civic was pushed sideways into a Ford Escape stopped on Sunset, but no one in the Escape was injured.

Investigators determined Vargas was driving under the influence of alcohol, and after he was treated for minor injuries at a hospital, he was booked on suspicion of murder and held in lieu of $1-million bail, authorities said. Anyone with information is asked to call (213) 473-0234 or (877) 529-3855.
