Appalachian State wins third title
Armanti Edwards threw for three touchdowns, and Appalachian State jumped to a 21-0 lead and never trailed in beating Delaware, 49-21, on Friday night at Chattanooga, Tenn., for a third consecutive title in the Football Championship Subdivision.
The Mountaineers (13-2), who won their 12th straight playoff game, are the first team to win three consecutive titles. Delaware (11-4) was seeking its second championship in five years.
West Virginia Coach Rich Rodriguez was back in Morgantown after taking a flight from Toledo, Ohio. Sporting News Radio reported that he met with Michigan Athletic Director Bill Martin and President Mary Sue Coleman about possibly becoming coach of the Wolverines. . . . David Cutcliffe, the former Mississippi coach who spent the last two seasons as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator, was hired by Duke, the Associated Press has learned. . . . As expected, Oklahoma assistant Kevin Sumlin was introduced as Houston’s new coach after agreeing to a five-year deal.
