Pepperdine fails to keep up with Brigham Young, 86-67

Jason Walberg scored 17 points for Pepperdine, but the Waves fell to No. 25-ranked Brigham Young, 86-67, Saturday night at Provo, Utah.

Lee Cummard scored 21 points to help the Cougars (9-2) extend their home winning streak to 37 games, the longest active string in the nation.

Trent Plaisted had 18 points and matched a career high with 18 rebounds for the Cougars (9-2), who overcame 29 turnovers -- 19 of them in the first half -- by shooting 57% from the field.

The Waves (5-7) had 24 turnovers, shot only 31% from the field and were out-rebounded, 46-37.

UC Riverside 86, Loyola Marymount 74 -- Severin Gates scored eight of his 15 points in overtime to lead the host Highlanders, who overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half.

Gates, who also had 11 rebounds, forced overtime when he converted two free throws with 23.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, 70-70. He scored six of Riverside’s first eight points in overtime.

Aaron Scott scored 15 points, Larry Cunningham had 13 and Sean Cunningham and Chris Johnson each scored 12 for the Highlanders (3-6).

Freshman Orlando Johnson scored a career-high 25 points for the Lions (3-8) and Shawn Deadwiler had 16.

UC Irvine 72, San Francisco 59 -- Kevin Bland had 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the host Anteaters (4-5), who took the lead for good when Patrick Sanders scored on a layup with 9 minutes 54 seconds to play.

Sanders finished with 12 points and Darren Fells had 14. Manny Quezada scored 20 points for the Dons (4-6).

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 66, Cal State Bakersfield 56 -- Senior forward Matt Hanson had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Mustangs (5-5), who improved to 3-0 at home.

Trae Clark scored 15 points and Lorenzo Keeler came off the bench to contribute 10 for the Mustangs.

Alex Johnson led Bakersfield (1-9) with 15 points.

WOMEN

USC 55, Pepperdine 52 -- Nadia Parker scored all of her 17 points in the second half to help the host Trojans (5-4) rally from a 10-point deficit and end a two-game skid.

Parker scored all but eight of USC’s last 25 points.

Teena Wickett scored 14 points for the Waves (5-3).

Brigham Young 68, UCLA 58 -- Lindsey Pluimer and Nina Earl each scored 13 points for the Bruins (4-5), who trailed by as many as 11 points at Provo, Utah. Mallary Carling had 16 points for the Cougars (5-6).
