A 44-year-old man and a boy, whose age was not known, were killed in separate shootings in Compton on Saturday afternoon, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

Deputy Hugo Macias said the man, identified as Clifford Ingram, was shot at 12:46 p.m. as he drove through the intersection of 130th Street and North Grandee Avenue. The boy, whose name was not immediately released, was shot at 3:28 p.m. on the 1200 block of North Santa Fe Avenue. Both were declared dead at hospitals.

No further details were available in either case, Macias said.

The homicide rate in Compton has fallen sharply in the last two years since Sheriff Lee Baca assigned a team of deputies and detectives to fight crime in the area as part of the department’s contract to patrol the city. As of the end of October, Compton had marked 29 homicides, the lowest number for the date in more than two decades, officials said.

Macias said updated figures were not available Saturday.

Last week, as part of the Sheriff’s Department’s continuing efforts to reduce gun violence in the area, about 300 rifles, shotguns and handguns were collected from residents in exchange for $100 gift cards.
