Dog defenders stand their ground

Re “Collar the dogs,” Opinion, Dec. 26

Will Beall is certainly entitled to complain about inconsiderate people and their dogs, of which I am aware there are many. But I’m afraid his real opinion is disclosed by his statement, “Sweetheart, your dog doesn’t need hip replacement. You need a new dog.” Ignoring the extremely patronizing “sweetheart,” it is apparent that Beall considers a dog to be disposable.

Others, including myself, believe that veterinary expenses are part of the responsibility of owning a dog. In any case, it’s my money, not his. Beall’s comparison with the situation of children who need medical care is pointless. I help pay for medical care for indigent children with taxes and charitable donations. Money spent on my dog’s care isn’t going to help ill children any more than the money Beall spends on what luxuries he prefers. Some people buy a BMW or a Mercedes. I drive an old Volvo but just paid for knee surgery for my dog, Blitzen, who was found on the street on Christmas 2003.

Before Beall has a doggy meltdown, perhaps someone should remind him about obnoxious parents and their equally obnoxious children in restaurants, theaters and shopping malls. Get a grip, Mr. Beall, and be thankful the only thing you have to gripe about during this season of hope is dogs and their yuppie owners. And, yes, “don’t get me wrong,” I like children; I might even like your child. I just don’t like screaming, out-of-control children (and their clueless parents) when I am eating, watching a movie or shopping at my local supermarket.
