A Brazilian party that’s fit for Rio

As a Brazilian living in Los Angeles, Renata Rosario, a graduate student at UCLA who also works for dance promoters Liquified, wanted to host a celebration for her fellow expats. “Every party here is naked women or Carnavale,” Rosario, 27, says. “That’s not what they have in Brazil. I want to have a Brazilian party that Brazilian people will be proud of.”

So Rosario has brought in DJs Fabricio Pecanha, who is making his stateside debut, and Mary Zander to headline Made in Brazil on Saturday night at Avalon.

While Pecanha’s large techno sound, which has taken him to festivals around the world, would fit in most local dance music nights, Zander will introduce L.A. clubgoers to a sensual, warm house vibe. “She’s so beautiful, and people watch her play and they’re like, ‘What’s she doing? She rocks,’ ” Rosario says. “It’s very feminine.”

As a dance music enthusiast herself, Rosario is particularly excited to bring Pecanha to L.A. “I’ve loved his music since I was 16. So I’m excited that his first time here playing in the U.S. is because of me,” she says.

If people share her zeal, Rosario plans to make Made in Brazil a regular promotion and perhaps expand it to other cities. “The main thing about Made in Brazil, it’s not just a party, but it’s a whole concept I created to launch as many South American talents as possible,” she says.
