Undercover police wounded at least one man Friday night during a shootout in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Two other men involved in the shootout fled and were being sought by a large contingent of police, who surrounded the area where the incident took place, said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.

No police officers were hit by the gunfire.

The shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m., as two undercover officers were working around Figueroa and 46th streets. Three men approached them on foot, Lee said.

“They began shooting at the officers,” he said. “The officers returned fire, striking one of the suspects, and he’s conscious and breathing and has been taken to a local hospital.”

Lee said he did not know what the undercover officers were doing, or whether any words were exchanged before the shooting began. He did not know if either of the men who fled had been hit by the police gunfire.
