Taking it to a new hole level

Incredibly, there are still some challenges left out there for intrepid golfers with a few disposable dollars.

This one’s a genuine conversation-stopper: golfing a course with holes in three states.

Granted, it won’t take long. Apparently recent rain has caused grass to grow on the desert course Cameron’s Corner in Australia, which hits three states, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland. Greenskeeper Bill Mitchell is getting ambitious, thinking about turning the course into nine holes, up from three, according to ABC News online.

“I’m thinking about putting another hole in South Australia which will be No. 4, four [holes] in Queensland, and I’ll have the ninth hole back here at the corner,” he told the news service.

Slow ride

NASCAR driver Kyle Petty didn’t exactly receive praise from one family member after he stepped outside of his usual line of work. He ran a marathon in Las Vegas in 2005, finishing in 4 hours 16 minutes 1 second.

“Afterward, my father [Richard] told me I was an idiot for running 26 miles,” Kyle Petty told Runners World.

However, there are benefits to his day job.

“Race-car driving is really a slow sport,” he told the magazine. “Our races can take four hours, so you need endurance. Running lets me be as fresh at the end of a race as at the beginning of one.”

Colbert Day, eh?

He wasn’t born in Oshawa, or anywhere in Canada, for that matter. He grew up in South Carolina.

So why will March 20 be known as “Stephen Colbert Day” in Oshawa, Canada?

The mayor of that city lost a hockey bet with the host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report.” Colbert had backed the Saginaw (Mich.) Spirit against the Oshawa Generals, and the Spirit won, 5-4.

“If Oshawa wins, I will wear an Oshawa jersey on my show. But when the Spirit kicks Oshawa’s moose haunches, I don’t want to declare ‘Stephen Colbert Day’ on my birthday, I want to declare it on your birthday,” Colbert said on his show to the mayor.

Typecast

Snowboarder Shaun White, an Olympic gold medalist, isn’t going to snap up just any movie script that comes his way. A bit of variety might be nice, to put it mildly.

“I’ve been sent like 20 movie scripts,” he told Outside magazine. “And the first lines are always, ‘What’s up, brah?’ Nope, nope, nope.”

White, when asked what he would tell Tony Hawk to do if he hired him as a brand manager, said: “Grow out the hair and dye it red.”

Said Hawk: “Oh, God.”

Kansas Coach Bill Self, to the Sporting News, on the worst loss of the college basketball season on the national scene: “Oral Roberts over Kansas because I’m most familiar with that.”
