A driver was fatally shot by California Highway Patrol officers early Sunday after he allegedly pointed a gun at the officers, authorities said.

The incident began about 1:30 a.m. when a CHP unit saw a white pickup truck parked on the shoulder of the Ventura Freeway, CHP Officer Rick Quintero said. When the patrol cruiser stopped, the driver took off and led CHP units on a chase that spanned three freeways.

The driver got off the freeway in El Monte a short time later and smashed into a wooden fence, Quintero said.

The driver got out of the car and allegedly brandished a weapon, authorities said. Officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he refused, Quintero said. The name of the driver, described only as a 28-year-old male, was not released.
