Stanford player gets another year

Stanford forward Fred Washington was granted a medical hardship by the NCAA for last season’s knee injury and will return to play for the Cardinal next season.

Washington played in only five games during the 2005-06 season before a knee injury cut the season short.

Washington has started all 24 games this season, averaging 7.8 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Illinois guard Jamar Smith will sit out the rest of the season after suffering a concussion in a traffic accident Monday night. Smith, a sophomore averaging 8.1 points, was driving during a snowstorm when his vehicle struck a tree. He was treated and released from a hospital.

His passenger, freshman center Brian Carlwell, suffered a more severe concussion and was released from a hospital Friday. He might play again this season, Coach Bruce Weber said.

North Carolina freshman forward Brandan Wright is questionable for the Tar Heels’ game today against Boston College after hurting his right shoulder during practice. Wright is averaging 14 points and six rebounds.
