Marchant awaits news on stomach muscle

Times Staff Writer

Results of an MRI exam that Ducks center Todd Marchant took Monday to determine the severity of his injured stomach muscle will not be available until today, team officials said.

The injury, however, could keep the veteran out of the lineup. Marchant, who sat out Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Kings, said the injury is related to the one he suffered in a Dec. 23 game against Phoenix that caused him to miss six games.

Marchant aggravated the muscle Saturday against the Kings.

“I tried to go around a defenseman and I felt a little bit of a tweak of my abdominal muscle,” he said Sunday. “Hopefully it’s nothing too bad. We’ll see what happens.”

The Ducks called up center Tim Brent from their minor-league team in Portland, Maine, in advance of Marchant’s possible absence. Brent made his NHL debut in January and was scoreless in two games.

Meanwhile, Chris Pronger underwent precautionary tests on his chin and throat after being struck by a shot from the Kings’ Lubomir Visnovsky. Ducks officials believe the injury is not serious.

Pronger’s teammates were relieved when they saw the big defenseman walking around the dressing room with no visible damage other than a red-colored bruise under his chin.

“It’s scary for everybody, no matter who it is,” center Ryan Getzlaf said. “Guys are always concerned when you get a puck in the face. It’s not good for anybody, opposition or not.”

Jean-Sebastien Giguere started for the first time on consecutive nights since coming back from his groin injury on Jan. 28.

“I didn’t think he was terribly overworked in [Saturday’s] hockey game,” Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle said. “It wasn’t a question of where he was overly taxed. I thought it was a situation where he could come back.”

Giguere made 21 saves Sunday at the Honda Center, less than 24 hours after stopping 30 of 32 shots in a 3-2 shootout win at Staples Center.
