The greats will groove at jazz fest

Share

Veteran alto saxophonist Phil Woods’ belated debut is a highlight of the diverse lineup of jazz acts scheduled to play at the 29th annual Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl on June 16 and 17. One of the surviving primal figures of the bebop revolution, Woods was presented with the Recording Academy’s president’s merit award at last week’s Grammy ceremony.

Continuing a trend that began last year, the festival again largely bypasses the pop-oriented acts that had moved into spotlight positions over the past decade. Other veteran acts on the bill include the Count Basie Orchestra (conducted by Bill Hughes), the Randy Brecker-Bill Evans Soulbop Band, multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller and singer Dianne Reeves. There also will be an 80th birthday celebration for saxophonist Red Holloway (featuring singer Kevin Mahogany).

Bill Cosby, returning for his 27th season as master of ceremonies, will also lead his all-star Cos of Good Music ensemble.
