Late run sparks Titans to win

Bobby Brown had 29 points and a career-high nine rebounds and Cal State Fullerton pulled away for a 79-73 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference game Thursday night at Fullerton.

Brown became Fullerton’s all-time leading scorer with his 1,879th career point, surpassing Leon Wood, who played at Fullerton from 1981 to 1984 and is now an NBA referee.

Marcus Crenshaw added 23 points for the Titans, 19-7 overall and 9-4 in the Big West. Justin Burns had five blocks.

Alex Harris, the Big West’s leading scorer, had a career-high 35 points and eight rebounds for the Gauchos (15-10, 6-5), who lost their fourth consecutive game. Chris Devine added 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Fullerton broke a 56-56 tie with a 10-0 spurt that gave the Titans a 66-56 lead with 5:49 to play. Crenshaw led the surge with six points.

Santa Barbara, which trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, used a 10-0 run to move ahead, 42-38, with 16:09 remaining. Harris scored seven points during the rally.

UC Irvine 73, UC Davis 59 -- Patrick Sanders scored 15 points and Michael Hunter added 13 to lead the Anteaters past the Aggies in a nonconference game at Irvine.

Mark Kelley scored eight of his 12 points in the game’s first five minutes for Irvine (13-16).

Dominic Calegari led Davis (4-21) with 21 points and seven rebounds. He scored his team’s first 11 points over a 7-minute 44-second span, then scored seven in a row in the second half.

Thomas Juillerat scored 11 points and C.J. Portz had 10 for the Aggies, who have lost nine in a row.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 70, UC Riverside 54 -- Titus Shelton scored 13 points and Matt Hansen added 12 at Riverside and the Mustangs (15-10, 6-5 Big West) won their fourth in a row.

Justin Bell scored 15 points, Henrick Thomsen had 12 and Larry Cunningham added 10 for the Highlanders (6-21, 1-11).

WOMEN

No. 8 Stanford 65, UCLA 54 -- Jayne Appel scored 24 points to help the Cardinal overcome the absence of leading scorer Candice Wiggins (hamstring injury) and clinch at least a share of a seventh consecutive Pacific 10 Conference title at Stanford.

The Cardinal (24-4, 16-1 Pac-10) used a late 11-2 run to put away the Bruins (7-10, 13-16). Noelle Quinn scored 17 points to lead UCLA, which has lost four in a row.

California 86, USC 79 -- Ashley Walker scored a career-high 32 points, including two crucial free throws at the end of regulation, to spark California to an overtime victory at Berkeley.

Devanei Hampton added 25 points and eight rebounds for California (21-7, 10-6). Eshaya Murphy scored 19 points for the Trojans (16-11, 10-7).
