A Texas man wanted for more than 50 years in a fatal California stabbing has confessed to the killing after a routine check of Social Security rolls tipped off investigators, police said.

Alfonso Del Rio, 77, fled to his native Mexico in 1956 after he stabbed Juan Ontiveros, 23, during a fight outside a restaurant in Oakland, police there said.

He later moved to a Texas border town and raised a family.

Del Rio drew the attention of authorities during a check by the Social Security Administration to see if recipients of benefits had any outstanding warrants.

Alameda County officials did not plan to pursue the homicide case, saying time had weakened the evidence against Del Rio.
