What’s so Super about this day?

Now that Peyton Manning has finally won the big game, beating the Patriots in what I consider the “real” Super Bowl, I don’t have to watch football on Sundays anymore. In fact, I am going to take my wife out to a pre-Valentine’s Day brunch. I already made the reservation -- Sunday, Feb. 4, at 3:25 p.m.

Two African American head coaches in the Super Bowl; one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, the Pittsburgh Steelers, hires an African American coach; the New York Giants hire an African American as general manager; and the NFL celebrates the erosion of its “glass ceiling.”

If this were 1967, congratulations would be in order. Heck, congratulations would be in order if it were 1977. However, since it’s 2007, I am left wondering why none of the owners have been held accountable for the prejudice they exhibited in the denial of the many qualified candidates for the sole reason that they didn’t look the part.

Jimmy the Greek, John Rocker and Rush Limbaugh have all been vilified for making inappropriate statements that did no actual harm. Yet NFL owners and team presidents, who actually denied job opportunities to qualified candidates because of the color of their skin, get a pass.
